Welcome
This is a basic introduction to Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ), how we are set up and how we build value for our affiliates. We look forward to being part of an exciting future for mountain biking in New Zealand in partnership with you and your club.
Background
Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ) are the national body for mountain biking in New Zealand and are responsible for leading the development and growth of both competitive and recreational mountain biking.
The strategic aims of MTBNZ are:
1. To encourage participation in mountain biking and membership to local mountain bike clubs.
2. Build a stronger affiliate network that allows regional resources and initiatives to be integrated to achieve nationally relevant mountain bike projects.
3. Support talent development in all areas of competitive mountain biking.
4. Support high performance development targets, particularly for downhill which is currently not well supported.
5. Participate and actively encourage the development of coaching capability within MTBNZ.
6. Seek opportunities to raise funds to support the sustainability of MTBNZ goals
7. To build the capability within the MTBNZ Executive to ensure leadership of the sport in all portfolio areas.
MTBNZ has entered a strategic alliance with BikeNZ to enhance their capability to achieve the above goals. We see this partnership with BikeNZ as an important aspect of delivering value to mountain bikers in New Zealand and continue to work with BikeNZ to achieve our strategic aims.
How can I/my club get involved?
There are a number of ways to become associated with MTBNZ.
1. Become an affiliated club (requires a group of individuals to apply - the form follows).
2. Hold a MTBNZ Race or Technical Licence as an individual. This includes Commissaires, Technical officials, Coaches, who are aligned with an affiliated club.
3. Hold a Private Event Promoter Licence.
4. Become an Affiliate. This is a new category, which is more suited to organisations that do not wish to have ‘affiliated club' status, but consider themselves part of the wider mountain bike community in New Zealand and have shared aspirations for the growth of the sport.
We are currently drafting a MoU to cover this relationship.
What does it cost to join MTBNZ?
Affiliation currently costs $120 per calendar year. Clubs may affiliate to MTBNZ by completing the attached club affiliation form and forwarding it with payment to the BikeNZ office. If you are a club new to MTBNZ we offer you a 6 month grace period with your affiliation fee, so join us today! The various licences also attract a fee that differs for each licence. To recognise the important contribution that Coaches and Commissaires make to mountain biking, the licence is free.
Benefits of associating with MTBNZ as an affiliated club
1. Strategic representation.
Club affiliation allows participation in the national strategic planning process for mountain biking in New Zealand. This strategic plan then defines the scope and priorities for MTBNZ and is delivered in partnership with BikeNZ. This process is a vital part of providing leadership to BikeNZ about a vision for mountain biking in New Zealand.
2. Access to regular planning and development information.
Both MTBNZ and BikeNZ provide regular information about mountain biking related events and issues that build local knowledge and capability.
3. National database for lobbying activities.
Leveraging the combined membership of affiliated clubs to lobby for the impact of mountain biking in New Zealand is an important part of demonstrating the value of our activity to New Zealand.
4. Access to National Race and Technical licences.
Members of MTBNZ affiliated clubs may apply to BikeNZ for a UCI racing licence enabling them to gain points while racing in the New Zealand MTB National Series or win a title in the New Zealand National Championships. International race licences allow our outstanding athletes with racing opportunities overseas. Technical licences are used to identify and develop stronger communities of people involved either in coaching or race adjudication.
5. Access to Public Liability Insurance.
Affiliation by mountain bike clubs to MTBNZ, and MTBNZ's membership of BikeNZ, brings clubs in under the BikeNZ Public Liability insurance policy. The cover negotiated for Public Liability insurance is $5 million PL and $1 million Forest Fire extension at no cost (other than the affiliation fee) for all club sanctioned events*. Clubs are provided with an affiliation letter and copy of the insurance certificate to assist them in gaining access to lands and/or for funding applications.
