This year a group of 4 male endurance riders will be selected to do a 3 month development campaign to the USA (Trexlertown) and Europe (Belgium) for a racing and training block.

The campaign will start in the first week of June, travelling to Trexlertown, Pennsylvania to participate in approximately 6 weeks of racing at the Valley Preferred Cycling Centre http://www.thevelodrome.com/

The riders will then travel from the USA to Belgium around the middle of July to participate in another 6 weeks of Kermesse racing near Brussells (finishing near the end of August.)

BikeNZ will assist with the logistics of this campaign and will provide guidance on the ground (Dayle Cheatley in the USA and Steve Connell in Belgium) however all costs will be the riders responsibility to cover and there will be a requirement that riders be predominantly self sufficient.

Including Airfares, accommodation, food, ground transportation, race entries, insurance, excess charges and other incidentals the cost of this campaign is estimated to cost between $7500-9500. To give the chosen riders a good amount of time to look at fund raising options a decision on the team will be made very quickly.

We will require a brief CV to be submitted to bryan@bikenz.org.nz by 7pm Sunday 28 February and by 9am Wednesday 3 March final participants will be selected.

2010-2011 BMX Selection Policy

The BMX selection policy for 2010-2011 is now available, please click on the link below.

Southland sprinter Eddie Dawkins produced a golden finish for the New Zealand
cycling team on the final night of the UCI World Cup in Beijing.

Dawkins
took out the gold medal in the men's sprint, producing an emphatic display to
win his quarterfinal, semifinal and final all in two straight rides for an
unbeaten run at the Olympic velodrome.

The New
Zealand squad grabbed three medals on the final night - one of each colour -
with the women's pursuit winning the silver medal against Australia while
outstanding prospects Tom Scully and Myron Simpson grabbed bronze in the final
of the Madison.

It
completed an excellent meet for the largely development team with seven medals
and a fourth from 10 events.

The icing
on the cake came with the gold medal to Dawkins who produced a mixture of
power, speed and outstanding tactics.

He
qualified fifth fastest with a superb 10.391 before knocking off Kilo Time
Trial gold medallist Miao Shang (China) in front of his home crowd in two
straight rides in the quarterfinal.

Dawkins was
impressive in accounting for Maximillian Levy (FRA) in the semifinal, again in
two straight before dominating the final against another Frenchman, Michael
D'Almeida, the second qualifier, in two rides.

The women's
combination of world champion Alison Shanks, Lauren Ellis and Rushlee Buchanan
topped the qualifiers with a sharp 3:25.727 from Australia's 3:26.218 to move
into the gold medal ride.

Cambridge
rider Jaime Nielsen provided the fresh legs for the gold medal ride along with
Ellis and Shanks with the New Zealand's locked in a battle against the
Australian combination who qualified for their first World Cup final.

The kiwis
found themselves 1.3 seconds down after a flying first kilo by the Australians
and while the New Zealanders came back with faster times over the second and
third kilometres they could not bridge the gap.

While New
Zealand clocked a best time of 3:23.747, faster than their silver medal effort
in last year's world championships, they finished 0.9s behind the Australians
who recorded an outstanding 3:22.879, only fractionally outside Great Britain's
winning time at the worlds.

Earlier
Scully (Invercargill) completed an outstanding meet with his third medal when
he paired with fellow national champion team-mate Simpson (Auckland) to take
bronze in the 40km Madison.

The pair
cruised to win their qualifying heat earlier in the day and were the most
consistent pairing in the final, gaining points on six of the eight sprints.

The Hong
Kong combination skipped clear to put a lap on the field to guarantee them
overall victory with Italy on 18 points in second, just two in front of New
Zealand in an impressive performance.

Scully took
the bronze in the Points race on the opening night and came into the team
pursuit as fresh legs for Hayden Godfrey in their bronze medal ride.

The other
medals at the World Cup comprised a gold for world champion Shanks in the
individual pursuit and a silver for Godfrey in the Scratch race.

The squad
returns to New Zealand with riders to prepare for the Elite National Track
Championships in Invercargill next month, which double as the Commonwealth
Games Trials.

Beijing. The 2nd day of competition saw a very solid performance from the
young TP squad of Shane Archbold, Myron Simpson, Aaron Gate and Tom
Scully. The guys rode a 4.05 effort to secure the bronze medal in a
controlled and clinical ride. Australia with a very talented team of
established and upcoming riders convincingly took gold in 4.01.

A very exciting scratch race saw
Hayden Godfrey take out the silver medal. Zac Bell of Canada with the
scratch win, pulled out the Scratch and Points "double" with gold
medals in both events. Hayden looked strong & smooth throughout
the race and managed to manoeuver himself well for the final dash to the line,
with great positioning, just leaving his final run a fraction too late.
As you recall, Hayden won this same race last year.

Eddie Dawkins rode well taking 4th
in his best placing at the World Cup competiton.

Today's action (day 3) promises
some more excitement with the womens team pursuit, madison and sprint.

2010

A young New
Zealand cycling team grabbed two medals and a fourth placing on the second
night of finals at the UCI World Cup in Beijing.

The
development combination of Hayden Godfrey, Shane Archbold, Myron Simpson and
Aaron Gate claimed the bronze medal in an outstanding performance for the
development squad.

Godfrey
(Christchurch), the 2008 world omnium champion, followed with a silver medal in
the men's scratch race over 15kms, while Invercargill's Eddie Dawkins was just
pipped for a medal in the men's kilo, finishing fourth.

The team
pursuit combination were the third fastest qualifier in the morning with a
4:10.025 behind Australia and Netherlands and ahead of Ukraine who they faced
in the bronze medal rider-off last night.

The kiwis
upped their effort to clock an outstanding 4:05.278 with a controlled
performance, going faster of each kilometre which delighted BikeNZ head coach
Tim Carswell.

"The
development boys have put in some great work over the least eight months and
they really wanted the medal tonight," Carswell said.

"Their
performance is ahead of what our Olympic riders achieved at the same age which
is exciting for the track programme going forward. To be going 4:05 is a very
good effort."

Australia
dominated Netherlands to win the gold.

Godfrey
recovered from his pursuit final to produce a strong effort to win silver in
the 15km scratch race. The Canterbury rider was just edged by Canada's Zachery
Bell in the final sprint for the gold.

Dawkins
finished 8/100ths of a second outside the podium in the men's kilo time trial,
clocking a slick 1:03.190 to be fourth fastest in an impressive performance,
while fellow sprinter Simon Van Velthooven (Palmerston North) finished ninth in
the keirin, after he went out in the second round.

The final
day of action sees Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins in the sprint, Tom Scully and
Myron Simpson in the Madison and the combination of Alison Shanks, Jaime
Nielsen, Rushlee Buchanan and Lauren Ellis in the women's team pursuit.

UCI World
Cup, Beijing, day 2 finals:

China. Today was the first day of racing in the fourth and final round of
the 2009/2010 UCI World Cup Track "classics" competition. This
leg in Beijing is the final World Cup before the World Championships
in Copenhagen, Denmark in March 2010. This year's competition sees over
300 riders from 50 countries/teams entered.

Today, New Zealand had a very solid
start with some stellar performances from the young squad. Ali Shanks
comfortably took gold in the womens' individual pursuit and Tom Scully took a
fine bronze in a closely contested & very exciting points race. The
team sprinters also rode very well in the morning's session, narrowly missing
the medal ride off by the slightest of margins. The NZ team
sprinters' ride also included Sam Webster's saddle seatpost snapping
during the event, which didn't assist their efforts! Sam continued
despite this mishap and still managed to pull off a teriffic ride.

Tomorrow, Saturday, is the second
day of action and the NZ squad will be in the thick of it. The TP
men (Myron Simpson, Shane Archbold, Aaron Gate and Hayden Godfrey) will be in
full flight in the TP qualifying round. This will be followed by Simon
Van Velthoovem in the keirin, Hayden Godfrey in the scratch and
Eddie Dawkins in the 1KM TT .

A special note congratulations to
Simon Van Velthooven, who this week, received his formal invitation
to attend the JKA (Japanese Keirin Association) . This will see Simon
compete in Japan from April to September of 2010. Its a very prestigious
invite, as only 10 international riders are invited annually to Japan to race
in Japanese keirin. Keirin is one of the biggest professional sports in
Japan & the top riders are genuine superstars in their country. In
Japan, this year, Simon will be mixing it up with some of the best keirin &
sprinters in the world. Well done and look fwd to following
your progress.

Alison Shanks on her way to winning the Women's Individual Pursuit World Title in 2009.

New Zealand has a mix of proven and potential in the squad
to contest the third round of the UCI World Cup in Beijing starting tonight
(NZL time).

The 13-strong contingent are led by pursuit world champion
Alison Shanks who is joined by fellow world championship medallist Lauren Ellis
along with 2008 world omnium champion Hayden Godfrey as the most experienced of
squad.

The women's endurance riders include former Waikato rower
Jaime Nielsen, who is back in the squad after full recovering from injury last
year, and new national road champion Rushlee Buchanan (Te Awamutu).

The men's endurance squad comprise the young stars of the
future including national Madison champions Tom Scully (Invercargill) and Shane
Archbold (Tinwald), Myron Simpson (Auckland) and Aaron Gate (Auckland).

The men's sprint group are led by the Melbourne Wold Cup
trio of Simon van Velthooven (Palmerston North), Adam Stewart (Auckland) and
Eddie Dawkins (Invercargill) along with triple world junior champion Sam
Webster (Auckland).

"This world cup allows us the opportunity to continue with
our important development plans that will add depth and experience to the Track
Team," said Mark Elliott, BikeNZ's High Performance Director.

"It is a further chance to develop our combinations in the
women's team pursuit as well as working towards the world championships in a
couple of months.

"We have a group of very promsing young riders and this
meet will give them not only important international competition but allow us
to monitor their progress against the best nations in the World . Some of them
might push for selection for this year's Commonwealth Games but they will all
form an important part of our focus to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016
Olympics."

The riders will return to prepare for next month's RaboPlus
Elite Track Championships in Invercargill, which double as the Commonwealth
Games Trials, with the UCI World Track Championships in Copenhagen in March.

As fast as it started on a post Olympic rush, 2009 is ending with the next pinnacle event the 2010 Commonwealth Games firmly in our sights. At the time of writing we are only 285 days, 1 hour and 6 minutes away from the opening ceremony!

The BikeNZ HP Coaching and Performance Support staff met in Christchurch last week to go through a detailed planning review for the 2010 Games. With BikeNZ sending one of its largest teams to a major games (even with a tougher approach on selection criteria) the logistics are going to be a challenge.

Ten months out from a big event, which will be set in a very challenging environment (check out Slum Dog Millionaire), the planning revolves around noting and ranking risks that will impact on performance. Over 70 moderate to high risks were targeted by the performance team with a huge focus around team health and logistics. Looks like 2010 will also be gone in a flash for the HP team!

As you will read below the World Champs function was a great spectacle with BikeNZ proudly highlighting the World Champions across all our disciplines. Flowing from that has been a record number of Halberg nominations from BikeNZ athletes and coaches - a total of 14 BikeNZers have been nominated with Sam Webster one of the four finalists in the Emerging Talent Category.

http://www.halberg.co.nz/News.html

Good luck to all those finalists.

Enjoy a well deserved break with family and friends over summer - and if the weather carries on like this "enjoy the ride" wherever it takes you.

Women's Tour of NZ

The selectors have named the strongest ever New Zealand women's road team for the Tour of New Zealand which takes place on the roads of Wellington, the Wairarapa and Palmerston North from 24-28 February. The team is headed by Cath Cheatley and Linda Villumsen who will be amongst the favourites for the general classification. Kaytee Boyd and Jo Kiesanowski provide the team with strong opportunities for stage victories, while Rushlee Buchanan and Alison Shanks will provide a strong engine room upon which the team can call on to control the race. Team Director Andy Reid is very excited by the prospect of lining up such a strong team at the race. "Just looking at the line-up we have and the results that these riders have had at the last two World Championships it's a very exciting line-up that is going to provide some great results over the next couple of years leading towards London. I've also linked closely with National Women's Track Coach, Dayle Cheatley; to use this race as preparation for the track riders within the team for the track world championships should they be selected".

Newly crowned NZ National Champions Shane Archbold and double World Cup winner Tom Scully teamed up together alongside the pairing of Aucklanders Myron Simpson and Aaron Gate.

The race featured several strong Aussie teams and many were saying that it was the best line up for this race ever.

There was plenty of action and the pace was soon on with the pairing of Scull and Archbold picking up early points and after the second sprint they were at the head of the leader board. Gate and Simpson were riding a conservative race in the middle of the field which was strung out in one line and meant that they were struggling to move up.

Cameron Meyer and Glen O'shea were the first significant team to launch an attack and quickly gained half a lap advantage on the main bunch. but the bunch reacted and managed to make meyer and O'Shea earn their lap.

Sean Finning sneaked off the front of the bunch and steadily built an advantage that would see them take the lap leaving two teams one lap up. Scully and Archbold were in 3rd place with the highest points score, and were looking for the right timing to try to regain the lap.

Meanwhile Gate and Simpson had managed to pick up the sole point and seemed to be conserving energy for the final half of the 50km race.

The two teams were undoubtedly tactically superior to any of the other teams on the track, and were timing their changes to perfection, allowing Scully to cruise past Jack Bobridge and O'Shea to collect maximum points with 2 sprints remaining.

Gate used his initiative and sloped of the front of the bunch. No reaction from the head of the bunch allowed a quick gain of half a lap. As Simpson was slung in it was all or nothing to try to regain the lap to place them in 3rd overall. It took 9 laps for this to happen and the junction was made just after the penultimate sprint, elevating Simpson and Gate to joint second overall on 6 points.

For the last 20 laps, the pace was really on as Bobridge and Brown tried to gain a lap back. The bunch was splitting all over the track and poor positioning in the final 10 laps meant that both Kiwi teams did not score in the final sprint, with theteam of Gate and Simpson holding on to their impressive 3rd overall, and the team of Scully and Archbold in a well deserved 5th.

In the Victorian State Keirin Championships, NZ had triple junior World Champion Sam Webster in action and he was unlucky to progress to the finals after a photo finish showed that he missed out to Aussie Joel Leonard.

Sam is in action in the Victorian State Sprint Championships tomorrow, before staying in Melbourne to train for a week before heading to the Tassie Carnivals to meet up with his NZ team mates Ethan Mitchell, Simon van Velthooven and Eddie Dawkins.

BikeNZ BMX High Performance Assistant Coach position – Part time role

The BikeNZ High Performance BMX Programme is looking for an individual to fill the part time role of Assistant BMX Coach. The position would assist the National Coach with national and international training camps, campaigns and races, plus provide key mechanical support for the programme.

Key components of the role

Link between High Performance and Junior Development Programme (JDS) run in conjunction with BMXNZ. This will ensure that JDS athletes have quality training programs.

Assist with the coaching of the JDS training camps alongside the National Coach.

Work alongside the National Coach and assist where needed while with the team at national and international campaigns.

The NZ winter months are when the team travels to World Cup SuperCross events. During these times you will be required to assist the National Coach with planning and organising of projects and campaigns.
