Surgery for Julian Dean after crash in Gent-Wevelgem

Julian Dean injured his knee in a crash at a roundabout in a very wet 71st edition of Gent-Wevelgem in Belgium this morning.    He is now recovering from successful surgery to clean and repair the wound. Gent-Wevelgem was won by Team Columbia's 21 year old Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Julian Dean's accident happened early in the race as the peloton approached a roundabout where half the riders went left and half right.  Dean's teammate Mike Friedman explained on the team website that he and Dean were at the front of the chase group being pushed by Quickstep when a Quickstep rider overlapped his wheel knocking him down, with Dean going over the top of them both. 

"I didn't even know he was down until I stood up looking at my bike. I had radioed in right away, "Mike down, need bike." I looked right and saw JD's face and knew something was seriously wrong. I dropped my bike and ran over to him. I took one look at his knee and sort of freaked out at the spectators attempting to pick him up. "Leave him alone! His knee! Its f**ked, his knee is f**ked!" I kept saying...
